What fountain are you drinking from?

Jeremiah 2:10-12 asks: “… Has anyone ever heard of anything as strange as this? Has any nation ever traded its gods for new ones, even though they are not gods at all? Yet my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols!” “They have abandoned me- the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all” (Jeremiah 2:13).

Yes, we are often trading our God for idols, for things that occupy the preeminent place in our hearts reserved for Him alone. We abandon Him again and again, drinking from foul, smelly waters instead of from the fountain of living waters. Centuries later, Jesus promised this living water to the woman at the well (John 4:4). He also proclaimed, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). We still need this living water today. It gives life and nourishment to our thirsty souls. It satisfies like nothing else will. Why do we work hard at digging our own cracked, unproductive wells to find our own water, when our God has done all the work for us? Jesus said: “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38).

We need not labor for that which does not satisfy. It is already DONE. Just come and drink to your satisfaction, to the fullest, till it overflows.

Blessings,

Chinwe
